About
Designs by an engineer who actually knows how to build.
Mechanical Superiority is Mark's design and small-scale fabrication shop near Fort Collins, CO.
Mark studied mechanical engineering at the U.S. Air Force Academy and aerospace engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology, then spent three years as a developmental engineer at the Air Force Research Laboratory. After that came mining and industrial service at Laron, and agricultural technology development at Dairy Tech. He opened his own shop in 2023.
I believe that it is very important for engineers to spend lots of time on the shop floor actually building real systems, including the ones that they themselves have designed. It is the only way for us to learn what works in real life, and what only works in a CAD model. Unfortunately the apprentice-style of learning has largely been abandoned in modern times, in favor of an out-of-touch emphasis on academics and theory in the Universities where most engineers are trained. Beyond my education I have also been lucky enough to receive education and mentorship (and my fair share of “constructive criticism”) from many of the guys on the ground; machinists, fabricators, millwrights, mechanics, etc... who actually built the real systems that we were asking them to construct. I have since undertaken to learn the arts of machining, fabrication, and wrenching for myself through seeking mentorship, as well as self-education. This hands-on experience has been invaluable.

That is the overarching philosophy of this shop: High level academic and mathematical understanding, coupled with real world experience and dirty hands gained from years of experiential learning.
You'll speak directly with the engineer who is actually working on your project, the same day, in plain English.
No salesmen, no clueless managers, no language barrier, no bureaucracy, no delays. Overseas firms can be cheaper. The aim here is to be better.

Skills
Mechanical engineering and design, from parts to full assemblies. CAD modeling and shop drawings in SolidWorks, and Autodesk Fusion. MIG and TIG welding. CNC plasma cutting. Machine work on a knee mill. Rivet gun setup for driving solid rivets. CAM programming and running a Haas GR-510 CNC gantry mill at EhPro Custom Fabrication, where he also rivets and welds Air Force travel pods, and has the use of a sheet roller and an 8-foot sheet brake.
Why a small shop
Big shops want long production runs to keep their people busy. Variable, one-of-a-kind work is what this shop is for, and it's the interesting kind.
The writing on this site is the other half of the same instinct: most mechanical concepts aren't actually that complicated, but they're explained badly. Start with the torque essay.
Tell me what you're trying to build
A drawing, a model, or even just a napkin sketch: I can help you to refine your idea and make it a reality. If you're not sure about the finer particulars (like tolerances or materials selection), that's totally fine. With my experience, we can help nail the details so that the design turns out right the first time.
